The career of Pepys took him to the heights as President of the Royal Society and the most powerful man in Naval administration. It also took him to the depths – he was even imprisoned in the Tower of London. We follow his private life and loves and we consider the man so candidly revealed in the Diary.

The Traditions of Christmas with Meakin, the Victorian Butler with John White in character and costume

‘Meakin’, the Butler in a grand Victorian house, is charged with managing the household and attending to the needs of his Master and the numerous house guests but, as the Festive Season draws near, he is busy preparing the house for the celebrations to come and whilst he goes about his duties, he will be pleased to recount the ‘Traditions of Christmas’; their origins and meaning.

Beau Brummell by Ian Kelly

Beau Brummell cut a dramatic swathe through late Georgian society, from his early years as favourite to the Prince of Wales and arbiter of taste in the Age of Elegance, to his final precipitous fall into poverty, incarceration and madness. This revealing, funny and detailed lecture demonstrates the clothes and the fame were only part of what Brummell can teach us about art, style, wit… and men!

Phrases and Sayings: The Etymology of the City of London by Alan Read
Tuesday 1st November, 11am, £22 per person
The English language is rich in idioms, phrases and sayings which are part of everyday speech yet seldom do we consider their original meanings. This is an exploration of historical etymology, often traceable to the City of London. Even if you have to ‘rob Peter to pay Paul’ and it’s ‘raining cats and dogs’ you’d be ‘barking mad’ to miss this lecture.
